According to Southern Chester County Regional Police, they have arrested 25-year-old Marco Lopez-Esquivel of Avondale and charged him with Aggravated Assault, Disarming Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest or Other Law Enforcement, Simple Assault, DUI, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police, and assorted summary offenses, following an incident Nov. 24 along Gap Newport Pike in New Garden Township. At approx. 1:20 that morning, police attempted to stop a 1999 Ford for driving in the wrong lane of travel. The vehicle failed to yield and traveled from Newark Road to First Street in Avondale Borough, where it came to a stop. The driver, later identified as Lopez-Esquivel, exited his vehicle with his hands in his pockets and ignored verbal commands from police. He then resisted efforts to place him under arrest and struck an officer in the face with his elbow. An Electronic Control Weapon was deployed with little effect, and Lopez-Esquivel repeatedly attempted to take it from the officer. The struggle continued until he was finally taken into custody. Lopez-Esquivel did submit to a chemical test of his breath, resulting in a blood alcohol content of .11%. He was processed and held for arraignment, after which he was committed to the Chester County Prison in lieu of posting $50,000.00 bail. The case is pending a preliminary hearing.
